Buller Memorial Committee The Buller Memorial Committee was established at the Guildhall in Exeter on October 26th, 1901, in response to Redvers Buller's dismissal from the British Army. The Committee decided it would build a statue of Buller in Exeter in March 1902 and commissioned a design from the sculptor Adrian Jones the following year. The Committee was made up of nine men: Albert Edward Dunn, Edwin Charles Perry, Thomas Linscott, J. A. Loram, T. Moulding, W. Wreford, E. J. Domville, C. J. Ross, and W. H. Steer. Dunn, Perry, and Linscott all variously served as Mayors of Exeter between 1900 and 1905, and Wreford was Deputy Mayor of Exeter in 1901. Dunn chaired the Committee, Ross and Linscott were honorary secretaries, and Steer was the clerk to the committtee.

Harland & Wolff Major shipping company in the United Kingdom, formed in the mid-nineteenth century and still in existence today. Harland & Wolff was actively involved in supporting Britain's maritime empire with its ship-building yards across the UK. Harland & Wolff built ships for a number of companies involved in empire, such as the African Steamship Company, the Asiatic Steam Navigation Company, and the West India & Pacific Steam Navigation Company, During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Harland & Wolff allegedly received orders for steamers from the Confederate States of America, which was fighting to preserve the institution of slavery in the United States, although whether these orders were actually carried out has not yet been proven.
